In a message to her grandson, Shri Tathagata Bhattacharya, the President has said, "I am sad to learn about the passing away of acclaimed writer and social activist, Smt. Mahasweta Devi.
Smt. Mahasweta Devi enriched Bengali literature through her prolific writing and unique style. She was a powerful voice against all forms of oppression and injustice. Her writings reflected the life of downtrodden and her voice was seen as the collective conscience of society reflecting its yearning for justice and equality. Smt. Mahasweta Devi did not rest content with mere writing about issues. She actively engaged in social work and spent years researching and campaigning for the welfare of the tribals of Bengal. She was honoured by a grateful nation with a large number of awards during her lifetime including the Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Shri, Jnanpith Award and Padma Vibhushan. In her death, India has lost a creative genius who contributed immensely to literature and social change. But her works will remain forever inspiring the people to strive to build a better India.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences and convey the same to the rest of your family members. I pray to the Almighty to give you and other members of the family strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss”.
